Whenever we hear the story of independent India, some names are always mentioned with deep respect. One such name is Dr. Rajendra Prasad. It’s not enough to simply call him the first President of India; he was truly a great human being simple, honest, and completely dedicated to the nation.
1. A Brilliant Student from the Soil of Bihar
Rajen Babu was born on December 3, 1884, in a village called Ziradei in Bihar. His story inspires us even more because of his connection to our own region. From a young age, he was an exceptionally sharp student. Such was the extent of his brilliance that when he took the entrance exam for Calcutta University, he secured the first position. An examiner was once so impressed with his answer sheet that he famously wrote: “The examinee is better than the examiner.”
Despite being so intelligent, he always remained grounded. He chose the path of service to the nation, leaving behind his successful legal practice.
2. Mahatma Gandhi’s True Companion

In 1917, he met Mahatma Gandhi. Gandhi Ji’s philosophy and simplicity deeply affected him. Dr. Prasad immediately gave up his brilliant legal career and plunged into the fight for India’s freedom.
He worked shoulder-to-shoulder with Gandhi Ji in major movements:
- Champaran Satyagraha (1917): He was Gandhi Ji’s biggest helper in the fight to free the poor farmers of Bihar from exploitation by British planters.
- Non-Cooperation and Quit India Movements: He actively participated in these powerful movements. The British government imprisoned him many times, but his courage never broke.
3. The Greatest Responsibility of Nation-Building
When India gained independence and the time came to draft the Constitution, the greatest responsibility fell upon Dr. Rajendra Prasad.
- President of the Constituent Assembly: He was elected as the President of the Constituent Assembly. This was the body responsible for writing the Constitution of our country. His calm and unbiased leadership ensured that this huge and crucial task was completed successfully.
- The First President: On January 26, 1950, when India became a Republic, Dr. Rajendra Prasad was elected as the First President of our country. He served the nation in this highest office for a full 12 years, which remains the longest tenure to date.
4. A Legacy of Simplicity and Honour
Dr. Rajendra Prasad was known for his simplicity, integrity, and deep commitment. Even while holding the supreme position of President, his lifestyle and behaviour always reflected humility. In 1962, he was honored with India’s highest civilian award, the Bharat Ratna, for his great services to the country.
Dr. Rajendra Prasad’s life teaches us that true education is not just for getting a good job, but should also be used for the welfare of the country and society. At Shree Durgaji Public School, we resolve to follow the path shown by him.
