Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, popularly known as the “Iron Man of India,” is one such colossal figure. Although his birth anniversary on October 31 is celebrated as ‘National Unity Day’ (Rashtriya Ekta Diwas), his entire life inspires us to unite and strengthen the nation.

The Title of ‘Sardar’ and Early Struggles

Vallabhbhai Patel began his political journey under the guidance of Mahatma Gandhi. He gave up a highly successful career as a barrister to serve the nation’s freedom struggle.

• Kheda Satyagraha (1918): He fought for the rights of the farmers.
• Bardoli Satyagraha (1928): He successfully led the farmers’ movement against the unjust tax hike imposed by the British government. It was during this movement that the women of Bardoli honored him with the title ‘Sardar,’ meaning ‘Chief’ or ‘Leader.’

His unwavering resolve, decisive action, and firm belief in justice made him an extraordinary leader.

Architect of Unified India

After gaining independence in 1947, the biggest challenge facing India was the integration of over 562 large and small Princely States. Without their inclusion into the Indian Union, the unity and sovereignty of the newly formed nation were at great risk.

As India’s first Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister, Sardar Patel accomplished this seemingly impossible feat. He utilized a blend of diplomacy, strategic negotiation, and, where necessary, decisive action to bring these states into the Indian fold. This historic achievement truly cemented his legacy as the ‘Iron Man of India.’

He not only established the geographical unity of the country but also laid the foundation for a robust administrative framework. His pivotal contribution to organizing the Indian Civil Services (IAS, IPS) earned him the title of the ‘Patron Saint of India’s Civil Servants.’

Today, his powerful legacy is symbolized by the ‘Statue of Unity’ situated on the banks of the Narmada River in Gujarat. This world’s tallest statue stands as an eternal reminder of his integrity, patriotism, and steadfast commitment to a unified India.
